How are orfanas made?
Native to Taiwan, the Betel leaf withers two times a year. The leaf contains "arecoline" which is naturally antibacterial and is resistant to odor. The leaf can be shaped with moisture and heat. The insoles are all cut from Betel leaves; the soles are made from a mixture of Betel leaf powder and balata. Using the Betel leaf enables us to reuse a natural product and create jobs for farmers in the local community.
No chemicals were used in the processing of this leaf, contributing to its eco-friendly quality. Since the leaf is a natural product it will have inherent differences from piece to piece. The shoes are extremely comfortable. As your orfana’s mold to your feet you should expect to see some cracking and peeling of the insoles – that’s what makes them unique to you!
